Why US-Russia politics are on the forefront again?

At present, the US-Russia relationship is at its lowest point in recent times. The US has information that indicates Russia has prepositioned a group of operatives to conduct a false-flag operation in Eastern Ukraine.

But we are going to take a look at why these things happened in the first place.

When it comes to conceptualizing the different reasons why the Russian administration has made such provocations by threatening to invade Ukraine, we cannot conclude a single definite point. Therefore we are going to take into account three main points, which are the following:

  • 1.) Primal influence: Anybody here heard of the Soviet Union or USSR , well it used to be the main competitor of the West (especially the US) and acted as a balancing force in the bipolar world after the second World War 🗺. After its collapse in 1991, many new smaller countries were formed, and the largest and strongest among them was today’s ‘Russia’ 🇷🇺. Now you might be able to easily comprehend that Russia is in some ways the successor of the Soviet Union. Well, if you can’t then that’s not the case with Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia. Consequently, Putin wants to restore what was lost during the Soviet collapse, which is the ‘now-lost influence’ over the East European countries and its former members such as Ukraine, Uzbekistan, etc. As Ukriane is one of the prime allies of the US in East Europe, threatening to attack it might create doubts and instability in the eyes of other allies there.

  • 2.) Russian claims on Ukraine: As we already know Ukraine was an integral part of the earstwhile Soviet Union. Ergo, the Russian government and some of the people in Russia have a strong belief that parts of Ukriane culturally and socially belongs to Russia. In fact many pro-Russia groups are prevalent in the eastern border of Ukriane. This hypothesis might not be as significant as the other two reasons from a strategic point of view, but it certainly supplements the incentive to invade Ukriane.

  • 3.) Geopolitical Strategy: Pragmatically this might be the real reason why Putin was forced to make threats of invasion. As Ukriane is one of the largest neighbors of Russia in terms of military and size, the Westward drift of the nation likely created an insecurity in the minds of the Russian administration. Moreover, Putin might also want to test the new US President Joe Biden and his administration, after the messy withdrawel from Afghanistan 🇦🇫 and the sharp political differences that have risem in US domestic politics in the past 5 years.

Therefore, for President Biden it is a challenge to stand up for the principles that were laid down post-World War 2, and the first among them is that you don’t draw boundaries at the point of a gun.

Unfortunately for Putin, he’s got a fairly limited window to attack Ukraine, because the military equipment that the Russian Army has gathered near the border can only be used when the landscape is frozen. While the land is still not completely frozen, and it will only remain frozen for at least 2 months (Feb to March).

Finally, I would like to end this article by saying that, “War is not the way”.
